Biomass Sustainability Report Released by the European Commission


The report on sustainability criteria for biomass was released by the European Commission. The report makes recommendations for non-binding criteria, with voluntary schemes in Member States to be guided by sustainability criteria outlined in the report. In addition the criteria in this report are recommended not to apply to waste and only to apply to larger energy producers of 1MW thermal or 1MW electrical capacity or above. The report is accompanied by an impact assessment which shows that binding criteria would impose substantial costs on European economic actors.
